Kerkrade
Give Kerkrade one day for GaiaPark and Continium, or skip it and sleep in Heerlen 8.5 km away: the town is small and the border with Germany runs through the street.
Kerkrade is a former coal town on the German border, split from Herzogenrath by a line drawn through the middle of the old settlement. The mines closed in the 1960s and the town rebuilt around two big family draws, GaiaPark zoo and the Continium science museum, plus Rolduc Abbey. Most travellers see it as a half-day or day trip from Heerlen or Maastricht rather than a base.

Get around
The centre is walkable. Buses run from the main bus station on Rolduckerweg to GaiaPark, the stadium and neighbouring towns; regional trains link Kerkrade to Heerlen and Landgraaf, where you change for Aachen or Herzogenrath. Bikes are useful for the surrounding villages but renting one here is hard: ask at the tourist information desk in Continium or rent in a bigger town. Parking is plentiful, though the centre is usually paid; large free lots sit at Diepenbrockstraat, Einderstraat and Old Hickeryplein.
