Kerch sits at the eastern tip of Crimea, on the strait that separates the peninsula from mainland Russia. It is one of the oldest cities in the region — Greek Panticapaeum was founded here in the 7th century BC — and its sights are ruins, mounds, fortresses and a hilltop view rather than a rebuilt old town. Two days covers the archaeology and the war memorials; the sandy beaches and mud lakes are 20–60 km out and need a car or a marshrutka. The city is under Russian administration and reachable by the Crimean Bridge; check your own government's advice before booking anything.

Get around
The centre is walkable: embankment, Mount Mithridates and the main streets are within 20–30 minutes on foot. For outlying districts and beaches use marshrutka minibuses — the fare is posted on a sheet inside the bus and you pay the driver. Trolleybuses run between the central bus station and the train terminal. Taxis wait at the bus station; agree the total price before you get in.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Scams and watch-outs
- Check your government's travel advice for Crimea before you book: this desk does not plan around it, and consular help is limited.
- Bring cash. Cards issued outside Russia often do not work, and ATMs may not accept foreign cards.
- Most locals speak Russian only; English is rare outside hotels.
- Crimean Bridge and ferry traffic can be disrupted at short notice; keep a spare day if you are crossing to the mainland.
- Beaches and mud lakes are far from the centre — do not plan a swim and a museum day back to back.
- Ruins are unguarded: wear closed shoes on Mount Mithridates and at Panticapaeum, and watch for open pits.
The main risks are practical, not violent: no consular access for many nationalities, cash and card problems, long unlit walks back from the ruins, and summer heat on Mount Mithridates. Read your government's advice first.
