Kentucky is two trips in one state. The Bluegrass core — Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort, Bardstown — is a compact 1–2 hour drive triangle with the Derby, bourbon distilleries and horse farms. The rest is rural: Mammoth Cave in the south-centre, the Red River Gorge and Daniel Boone National Forest in the east, and the lakes of the west. Public transport between these is thin, so a car decides what you actually see.
