Kendal
Give Kendal one full day, or two nights if you want a base for the southern Lakes: it is a working market town, not a resort.
Kendal sits on the River Kent at the edge of the Lake District, 3 km off the West Coast main line at Oxenholme. It is a market town with a castle ruin, a parish church, two good museums and a strong independent food and drink scene, and it is cheaper to sleep in than Windermere or Ambleside. Most travellers use it as a half-day stop between the M6 and the lakes, or as a two-night base for Sizergh, Levens Hall and the Kentmere and Scout Scar walks.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end; buses run to Windermere, Keswick and Lancaster, and the branch train links Kendal station to Oxenholme for main-line connections. A car helps for Sizergh, Levens Hall and the fells, but parking in the centre is limited and priced by the hour.

Scams and watch-outs
- Kendal station is on the Windermere branch, not the main line: most long-distance trains stop at Oxenholme, 3 km away, and you need the branch train, a bus or a taxi.
- Rain is the default: bring a waterproof shell and shoes with grip for the fell paths above town.
- Many small shops and some cafés close by 17:00 and on Sundays; plan museum visits for the middle of the day.
- Fell paths from town get boggy and lose light early in winter: start before 14:00 and carry a torch.
- Check opening days for Abbot Hall and the Quaker Tapestry before you travel: both have had closures and reduced seasons.
Kendal is a low-crime market town and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are weather and terrain on the fells, fast traffic on the A6 and A65, and unlit riverside paths after dark.
