Kemptville
Kemptville, Nova Scotia
Go only if you fish or want a wilderness lodge: 1 night at Trout Point, or skip and stay in Yarmouth, 25 min south.
Kemptville is an inland village on the Tusket River in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, split into Kemptville, North Kemptville and East Kemptville. It has no town centre to walk: the draw is sport fishing on the rivers and lakes, and access to the Tobeatic Wilderness Reserve from East Kemptville. Most travellers use it as a one-night lodge stay or a fishing base, not a sightseeing stop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No fuel, no grocery store and no cell coverage guarantees in the village: fill up and buy supplies in Carleton or Yarmouth first.
- Wilderness areas have no facilities and patchy phone signal: tell someone your route and carry water and insect repellent.
- Deer and moose on rural roads at dusk and dawn.
- Winter closes or limits many services: check before travelling Nov–Apr.
Rural Nova Scotia is generally safe for visitors. The real risks are driving rural roads at dusk, cold water, and getting lost in the wilderness with no phone signal: go prepared and tell someone your plan.
