Kempsey
One night as a rail or highway break between Sydney and Coffs Harbour; skip it as a base unless you want Hat Head beaches and river country.
Kempsey is a service town on the Macleay River, about 400 km north of Sydney on the Pacific Highway and a stop on the Sydney–Brisbane rail line. The town itself is small: a museum, an Aboriginal art gallery, a handful of pubs and bakeries. Its real value is as a cheap overnight break on the drive north, with Hat Head National Park and its beaches 30 minutes east.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat and humidity: 30°C+ days with high UV; carry water.
- Flooding on the Macleay River closes roads in wet years: check Live Traffic NSW before driving.
- Country pubs and clubs can be rowdy late on weekends; keep to the main strips.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the back roads toward Hat Head and the hinterland.
A small country town and generally safe. The real risks are summer heat and UV, river flooding that closes roads, and long unlit stretches of highway at night: don't drive tired.
