Keith
Stop for 1–2 hours on the Adelaide–Melbourne drive, or sleep one night if you started late: fuel, bakery, a Land Rover on a pole, then go.
Keith is a grain-and-sheep town of about 1,350 people on the Dukes Highway (A8), 225 km from Adelaide and roughly 3 hours by car. Almost nobody comes here as a destination: it is a highway stopover with a bakery, a motel strip and a handful of 1910s buildings. Treat it as a leg-stretch and fuel point, or a cheap bed if you left Adelaide after lunch.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat: 35 °C+ days are normal Dec–Feb; carry water and do not walk far in the middle of the day.
- Long highway gaps: plan fuel and toilets before you leave, not after the gauge drops.
- Kangaroos and emus on the road at dawn and dusk; avoid driving the Dukes at night if you can.
- Total fire ban days: check the CFS website before any bush or roadside stop.
- Phone signal is fine in town but patchy on the back roads.
Very low crime; the real risks are heat, long drives and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk. Carry water, fuel early and do not drive the Dukes Highway at night if you can avoid it.
