Kebumen
Stop in Kebumen for one night if you are moving along Java's south rail line; skip it as a destination unless you want the Jatijajar caves and coast.
Kebumen is a regency town of about a million people on Java's southern rail line between Yogyakarta and Purwokerto. The town itself is a grid of markets, a grassed alun-alun and low-cost hotels; the reasons to get off the train are the karst caves and beaches 30 km west, and the food. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon, and one night is enough.

Get around
The centre is walkable in about 40 minutes end to end. Angkot minibuses run fixed routes at Rp2,500 a ride, paid on alighting; becak pedicabs cover short hops and expect haggling. Two local taxi firms operate, and ride-hailing apps work in town but can be patchy outside it. For the caves and beaches you need a car, a hired driver or a tour.
