Kearney sits on Interstate 80 in South Central Nebraska, roughly halfway between Omaha and Denver, and works as a one-night break on a long drive rather than a destination in itself. The draw is the Great Platte River Road Archway over the interstate, a free university art museum, a reconstructed 1848 fort, and — for two or three weeks each spring — hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes on the Platte River. A car is close to essential: sights are spread along the interstate and the old downtown grid.

Get around
No public bus network. The grid is easy to read: numbered streets run east–west and avenues north–south, with Central Ave as the divider. Taxis must be booked by phone — they do not cruise for fares. A car is the practical choice for the Archway, Fort Kearny and the crane viewing sites.
