Set the phone up before departure, not at the airport. Download 2GIS city packs for Almaty and Astana, download Kazakh and Russian in your translation app, and add a card to Yandex Go so you are not typing numbers in a taxi queue. If you plan an eSIM, install it at home and activate on landing.

On arrival, buy a local SIM if you want a local number: Beeline, Kcell, Activ and Tele2/Altel sell them with a passport at airports and city shops. A local number unlocks local payment wallets and some ride-hailing promos. If you stay longer than 30 days, foreign phones and SIMs must be registered (IMEI registration — check).

For getting around a city, open 2GIS first: it carries building-level detail, bus routes and offline mode. Yandex Go or inDrive covers taxis, with the fare shown before you accept. For intercity legs, buy rail tickets on the national railway site or app (check current name and payment options) and bus tickets at the station or through local agents; there is no single nationwide booking app.

For money, keep your bank's card app with travel notifications switched on, and carry a backup card. Local wallet apps generally want a Kazakh number, so they are a bonus, not a plan. For language, a translation app with offline Kazakh and Russian handles menus, addresses and taxi destinations; English is limited outside hotels and younger city staff.

Tips

Keep a screenshot of your address in Kazakh and Russian; drivers and passers-by read Cyrillic, not Latin transliteration. Save your hotel pin in 2GIS as well as Google Maps.

Ride-hailing is cheapest and least stressful in cities; outside them, arrange a driver through your guesthouse. Coverage drops in canyons and on steppe highways, so download maps and music before you leave town, and keep a paper note of your driver's number.

Two apps beat one for taxis: if a ride does not appear on Yandex Go, try inDrive. Prices are set by the app, so you avoid the airport queue negotiation.

If you rely on your home SIM, check roaming rates before streaming maps; a local SIM or eSIM is usually far cheaper for a week of navigation.
