Kayes
Skip Kayes unless you are a railway enthusiast or need a stop on the Bamako–Dakar route: one night is enough for the fort and the heat.
Kayes is a small, hot city on the Senegal River, once the colonial capital of French Sudan. Its main draw is the Medina Fort, 12 km east, and its position on the Dakar–Bamako railway. The city is known as one of the hottest in Africa. Most travellers pass through in a day or stay one night.
