Go as a half-day or one-night trip from Tokyo, not a base: the warehouse street is done in 3–4 h, and the last trains back run before midnight.
Kawagoe is a former trading town on the Shingashi river that supplied old Edo, and its Kurazukuri warehouse street survived the 1893 fire. It sits about 30–50 min from central Tokyo by private line, so most visitors come for a half day. The sights cluster 1.5 km north of Kawagoe Station, and the town is small enough to walk once you are there.

- The warehouse street runs along a trafficked road with narrow sidewalks; watch for cars and bicycles.
- Many small shops and sweets stalls are cash-only; carry yen.
- Last trains toward Tokyo leave before midnight; check the last departure for your line before a late dinner.
- The October Kawagoe Festival draws very large crowds; book beds and trains ahead if you go then.
Kawagoe is a low-crime suburban town and safe to walk by day or early evening. The real risks are traffic on the warehouse street, summer heat, and missing the last train back to Tokyo.
