Katwijk
Go for one night if you want a North Sea beach with a Dutch town behind it; skip if you want a city break — Leiden is 20 min away by bus.
Katwijk is a South Holland coastal municipality of about 65,000 people, made up of Katwijk aan Zee (the beach and fishing quarter), Katwijk aan den Rijn, Katwijk-Noord, Valkenburg and Rijnsburg. It has no train station: buses from Leiden Centraal reach the beach in roughly 20–25 minutes. Most travellers use it as a cheap, quiet beach base for the Bollenstreek and Leiden rather than as a destination in itself.

Get around
The built-up area is small and walkable; the beach, harbour and shopping streets sit within about 15 minutes of each other on foot. For Valkenburg, Rijnsburg or Katwijk aan den Rijn, use the local bus or a rental bike. Driving is possible but beach parking fills on warm weekends.
