Katsuura
勝浦
A half-day stop for the morning fish market and a bowl of tantanmen, not a base. One night only if you want a quiet coastal evening.
Katsuura is a small fishing city on the Pacific coast of Chiba, about 90 minutes by train from Tokyo. Its main draw is the morning market (asa ichi) by the shore, where locals sell just-caught fish and dried snacks until 11:00. The city is also known for Katsuura tantanmen, a spicy ramen that won the 2015 B-1 Grand Prix. Sights are few: a small underwater observatory and the ruins of Katsuura Castle. Most travellers pass through on the way to Kamogawa or the Bōsō Peninsula.

Katsuura is a quiet coastal city with low crime. Watch for traffic on narrow streets near the market; typhoons can disrupt travel in late summer and early autumn.
