Katherine is the Lower Top End's service town and the gateway to Nitmiluk National Park, about 300 km south of Darwin on the Stuart Highway. The town is one main street; the reason to stop is the gorge system, Edith Falls and the Jatbula Trail. A car or an organised tour is effectively required — the attractions are not walkable from the centre.

Get around
By car or organised tour. Roads to the major sights are sealed but can flood in the wet season. Greyhound coaches stop in town; The Ghan stops for a few hours but you cannot start or end your journey in Katherine.
