In 2026, do not visit for leisure: the US (Level 4) and Canada advise against all travel to the DRC. If you must go for work, fly into Lubumbashi and stay 2–4 nights; the rest of the region is reachable only by air or unreliable rail.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Central Africa ↗Sort the visa before the flight: none of the seven countries reliably issues tourist visas on arrival to Western passports, and e-visas here are tied to named airports.
  • Central Africa ↗Carry the original yellow fever vaccination certificate in your hand luggage; health desks at every Central African airport ask for it, and a missing card can mean refusal or a jab at the desk.
  • Central Africa ↗Before booking anything in or near the DRC, read the WHO Ebola situation page and your own government's health notice: the 2026 outbreak brought quarantine and boarding rules for people who have been in the DRC.
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the DRC authorities or embassy before booking; a visa is usually needed in advance.
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo ↗Check your government's advice province by province: most governments advise against all travel to the eastern provinces and several other areas, and the US and Canada advise against all travel to the DRC in 2026.
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention, and carry the yellow fever vaccination certificate, which is strictly checked at DRC entry.
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo ↗Photography in public places can lead to detention; do not photograph government buildings, soldiers, police, airports or bridges.

Katanga is the mineral heart of the DRC — copper, cobalt, uranium — and the site of the 1960–66 Katanga Crisis. It is a fertile plateau with a few colonial-era towns (Lubumbashi, Likasi, Kalemie) and almost no tourist infrastructure. The only practical gateway is Lubumbashi International Airport (FBM). Roads are bad to non-existent; a railway links Lubumbashi to Likasi but runs once or twice a month with no fixed schedule. For a work trip, base yourself in Lubumbashi and see the National Museum, the cathedral (1910) and the zoo. Everything else requires a flight or a multi-day overland challenge.

  • The DRC is among the most dangerous and least developed countries in the world. Travel only if your government allows it and you have organised pickup and accommodation.
  • Roads range from bad to non-existent depending on the season. Do not drive yourself.
  • The railway between Lubumbashi and Likasi is unreliable: once or twice a month, no fixed schedule.

Rainy season November–March; dry season May–September. Temperatures are moderate for the tropics (20–30 °C (68–86 °F)). Best months: May–September (dry, cooler).

The dry season (May–Sep) is the best time for road travel, but roads are still bad. The rainy season (Nov–Mar) makes many roads impassable.
