Give Kaskinen one night, or a half-day stop if you are already driving the Ostrobothnia coast. It is Finland's smallest town: 1,300 people, a 2 km centre.

Kaskinen (Kaskö in Swedish) is Finland's smallest town, founded 1785, on the Gulf of Bothnia and surrounded by the municipality of Närpes. The centre is a 2 km strip you can walk end to end; the real draw is the sea — the Sälgrund lighthouse, the guest harbour and the Eskilsö ferry. There is no passenger rail, so you arrive by bus or car. One night is enough; two if you want a lighthouse tour and a beach day.

Get around

  • No passenger trains: bus or car only.
  • Most cafés and the lighthouse café run summer-only; check dates before you build a day around them.
  • Sälgrund tours need booking ahead, and groups of six or more for private tours.
  • Shops close early on Saturday and open late on Sunday; the Sale store is the main grocery.

Very safe. The real risks are cold water and slippery rocks on the islands, and quiet roads with moose at dusk — walk the shore with care and drive slowly after sunset.
