Kars

Give Kars two nights: one full day for Ani, one morning for the castle and Kümbet Mosque. Come May–Sep; winter nights hit -25°C.

Kars sits at 1,800 m in Turkey's far northeast, near the Georgian and Armenian borders, and most travellers come for one reason: Ani, the ruined Armenian capital 45 km east. The town itself is small and walkable, laid out on a Russian grid after 1878, with a citadel, a 10th-century church-turned-mosque and a cheese culture left behind by Swiss settlers. Two nights covers both without rushing; the Doğu Express from Ankara takes 26 hours, so most people fly in.

Get around

The centre is walkable: castle, Kümbet Mosque, Taş Köprü and the museums sit within about 1 km. Dolmuşes and taxis cover the airport and bus terminal. For Ani there is no public bus — take the daily tourist minibus or a taxi.

  • The old bus station northeast of town is disused — the new terminal is by the airport.

Kars is a small, calm city and feels safe by day and evening. The real risks are winter cold and snow, the altitude, and unmarked paths at Ani — stay on the trails and away from the border fence.
