Karmatanr
करमाटांड़
Skip unless you are a Bengali literature enthusiast: a 30-minute stop at Vidyasagar's former home and a working homoeopathy clinic, then move on to Deoghar or Madhupur.
Karmatanr is a hamlet in the Santhal Parganas of Jharkhand, known only as the place where Bengali reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar spent his last 18 years. His residence Nandan Kanan, a girls' school he founded and a free homoeopathy clinic are the sole reasons to visit. The village has no tourist infrastructure: no hotels, no restaurants and no shops for travellers. Most visitors come as a half-day detour from Deoghar (about 40 km away) or Madhupur.
