Karlsruhe
Give Karlsruhe one full day plus a night: the fan-shaped centre, palace and ZKM are a half-day, and it works as a cheaper base for Heidelberg and the Rhine-Neckar.
Karlsruhe is a planned city, laid out in 1715 as a fan of streets radiating from the palace tower, and it still reads that way on foot. It is a science and civil-service city rather than a tourist one, so you get a relaxed centre, two federal courts, a strong media-art museum and easy tram-train links to Heidelberg, Baden-Baden and the Black Forest edge. Most visitors need one day and one night; add a second night if you want day trips.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- Validate (stamp) your ticket before boarding; inspectors are common and fines apply.
- Almost every tram line pauses for a few hours overnight, so check the last connection.
- The Staatliche Kunsthalle main building has been closed for renovation; check before planning around it.
- Kaiserstraße has had major tram-tunnel construction (Kombilösung); expect diversions and works.
- Baden-Airpark shuttle buses run on weekdays only and are cash-only on board.
Karlsruhe is a low-risk city by German standards; the practical issues are ticket inspection on trams, bicycle traffic on shared paths and pickpockets around the main station and Marktplatz at night.
