Give Karatsu one night, two if you add Yobuko squid or the pottery kilns: it is a small castle-and-coast town, not a base for all of Saga.
Karatsu is a former trading port on the Genkai Sea, about 1 h 20 min by rail from Fukuoka. The draw is compact: a reconstructed castle on a hill, a 4 km pine forest along the bay, a pottery tradition collectors pay real money for, and the Kunchi festival on 2–4 November. Most travellers see the centre in a day and sleep one night; the coast at Yobuko and the kiln villages need a second day and a bus or car.

Get around
Trains do not reach most sights; buses from Oteguchi Bus Terminal are the practical option, and a rental car is better for the coast and the kilns. Bicycles hire next to Karatsu Station and suit the flat ride out to Niji no Matsubara. The ferry jetty for Takashima island is near the castle.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom

- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity

Scams and watch-outs
- Buses on the coast run a few times a day: check the last return before you set out.
- Riding the road through Niji no Matsubara after dark is risky; the route is unlit in places.
- Karatsu Kunchi (2–4 Nov) fills every bed in town: book months ahead or stay in Fukuoka.
- A section of the Takashima island road is closed by a landslide; you cannot loop the island on foot or by bike.
- Small restaurants and kilns may take cash only.
A quiet, low-crime town. The real risks are coastal bus timetables, unlit cycling on the Niji no Matsubara road, and summer heat; Japan is otherwise one of the safer countries for travellers.
