Karaman

Stop for one night on the Konya–Adana rail line, walk the medieval centre in half a day, then move on: two nights only if you have your own car for the caves.

Karaman is an Anatolian plateau city at 1,000 m, kept off the main tourist track and left with an intact medieval core: a Byzantine castle on a knoll, a 14th-century mosque holding relatives of Rumi, and a small archaeology museum. It is a working agricultural city, not a resort, and the sights beyond town need a car. Most travellers use it as a rail or road stop between Konya and Adana, or as a base for the Byzantine ruins of Binbirkilise and the Manazan caves.

Get around

The old centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes; dolmuşes run along the main streets. For the Manazan caves, Taşkale, İncesu cave, Güldere canyon and Binbirkilise you need your own car, a taxi hired by the hour, or an organised tour.

  • Summer afternoons on the plateau are hot and shade is scarce at the outlying ruins.
  • Carry lira in small notes; not every small café or shop takes cards.

Karaman is a low-crime provincial city and the centre is comfortable on foot by day. The real risks are the drive to the outlying ruins, summer heat and dehydration, and winter ice on the plateau roads.
