Stay 1–2 nights: Erdene Zuu and the old capital site are a half-day, the Orkhon valley adds a second day. No car, no valley.

Karakorum (Kharkhorin) is the site of the 13th-century Mongol imperial capital and the closest town to it, about 360 km by road from Ulaanbaatar. The town itself is small and walkable; the draw is Erdene Zuu Monastery, the excavated palace remains and the Orkhon valley beyond. Most travellers arrive on a 2–3 day loop with a driver-guide, not on public transport alone.

Get around

The town is flat and small: Erdene Zuu, the museum and the main guesthouses are within 1–2 km of each other, walkable in summer. For Xar Bulgas, Tövkhön Monastery or the Orkhon waterfall you need a vehicle and a driver — arrange it in Ulaanbaatar or through your guesthouse. Shared jeeps and minivans to Ulaanbaatar, Hujirt and Tsetserleg leave from the container market area in the middle of town.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Entering a ger: Call 'Nokhoi khorio' from a distance, enter right foot first without knocking, move clockwise to the left (west) side; avoid: Stepping on the threshold, walking between the two pillars, turning your back to the altar
  • Offered food or drink: Receive with the right hand (left hand supporting the elbow), taste a little; avoid: Refusing outright or taking with the left hand only
  • Snuff bottle exchange: When a man offers his snuff bottle, take it with the right hand, open slightly, sniff and hand it back; avoid: Taking snuff if you do not want it — just smell the cap
  • Feet and knocks: If you step on someone's foot, shake their hand straight away; avoid: Leaving the touch unacknowledged — it is seen as the start of a quarrel
  • Fire and stove: Treat the stove as sacred; avoid: Throwing rubbish into the fire or pointing your feet at it
  • Hats: Hold a hat by the crown, remove it inside; avoid: Stepping over or throwing a hat
  • Guests and gifts: Bring small gifts (fruit, sweets, vodka for elders, photos of your family) to a nomad family; avoid: Handing out sweets to children on the roadside
  • Leaving: Keep goodbyes short; your guide will lead them; avoid: Whistling inside a ger

Scams and watch-outs

  • Horses, cows and their droppings on roads and pavements — watch your step, especially after dark.
  • Long unpaved stretches on the Orkhon valley tracks; a standard sedan will not do, and the last climb to Tövkhön is rough.
  • Summer guesthouses and ger camps fill on weekends; book ahead in Jul–Aug.
  • Card payment is unreliable outside the bigger hotels — carry tögrög cash.
  • The bus from Ulaanbaatar may not be heated and leaves once daily; a missed seat costs you a day.

Low crime, high exposure: the real risks are livestock on the road, rough valley tracks, sudden weather and long distances with no phone signal. Tell someone your route before you leave town.
