Kansas is a drive-through state that rewards a slower route: Kansas City for barbecue and the free state history, Lawrence and Topeka on the same I-70 line, Wichita as the southern hub, and the Flint Hills as the one landscape worth planning a day around. Public transport between towns is thin, so a car is the practical answer. Two or three nights covers a first look; four to five if you add Dodge City and the western plains.
