Kandos
Go for one night if you are driving the Bylong Valley Way or catching a heritage train; otherwise skip — the town is small and the road in is slow.
Kandos is a former cement-works town of about 1,300 people in the Central West of New South Wales, on the Bylong Valley Way between Ilford and Rylstone. There is a small museum, two pubs with rooms and a handful of lookouts. Most travellers pass through on the way to Mudgee or Rylstone; the town fills when a heritage train runs.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Road quality drops sharply on the Bylong Valley Way and on Lue Road south of Mudgee: allow more time than the distance suggests.
- Fuel and food options are limited; fill up in Lithgow, Mudgee or Rylstone.
- Summer brings total fire bans and extreme heat; check conditions before any bush walk.
- Mobile coverage is patchy outside town.
A quiet country town and generally safe. The real risks are the drive in (rough surfaces, wildlife at dusk) and summer heat and fire danger: check the fire rating before you set out.
