Kambalda
Treat Kambalda as a half-day stop off the Goldfields Highway: Red Hill Lookout and the old cemetery, then push on to Kalgoorlie 55 km north. Sleep here only if Kalgoorlie is full or you work a mine roster.
Kambalda is a nickel-mining town of a few thousand people on the Goldfields Highway, about 55 km south of Kalgoorlie–Boulder and roughly 600 km east of Perth. Almost nothing here is built for visitors: two lookouts, a cemetery, a pub with rooms and a deli. It works as a 1–2 hour break on the drive between Kalgoorlie and Norseman or Esperance, and as a bed when Kalgoorlie is booked out during race week or a shutdown. Do not build a trip around it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat: 40 °C+ days are normal Dec–Feb; carry 4 L of water per person and do not walk the lake trails in the middle of the day.
- Mine traffic: haul trucks and utes on the highway and mine access roads; keep clear and never enter active mining land.
- Lake Lefroy is a salt pan, not a beach: crust can look solid and be soft underneath. Stay on marked trails.
- Services are thin — limited food, fuel and phone coverage gaps on the surrounding highways. Fill up and buy food in Kalgoorlie.
- Road trains and kangaroos at dawn and dusk on the Goldfields Highway.
Low crime, high heat and long distances. The real risks are 40 °C (104 °F) summer days, unmarked mine roads and driving the Goldfields Highway at dawn or dusk when kangaroos and road trains are out.Low crime, high heat and long distances.
