Kalbarri
Give Kalbarri 2–3 nights with a car: one full day for the gorge (Skywalk, Nature's Window, Z-Bend), one for the coastal cliffs and Hutt Lagoon.
Kalbarri is a 1,350-person town 600 km north of Perth, at the mouth of the Murchison River, and the base for Kalbarri National Park — a deep red gorge inland and a line of sea cliffs along the coast. You need a car, and you need to respect the heat: from December to April the park regularly passes 40°C and rangers close the hiking trails. Two or three nights covers the gorge, the coast and the pink lake at Hutt Lagoon.

Get around
You need wheels. A standard car or motorbike is fine on the park side-roads; caravans and campervans are not permitted inside the national park, and there is no public transport to the gorge or the coastal lookouts. Fuel up at Northampton before you arrive — you will do more mileage than you expect. The town itself is walkable end to end in about ten minutes.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Heat is the real risk: Dec–Apr the park tops 40°C and rangers close the hiking trails. Carry 3–4 litres of water per person per day; there is no drinking water in the park except a kiosk at the Loop.
- Park entry gates take a day pass per vehicle (2026 estimate A$15–17, card or cash); no charge on foot or by bicycle. Keep the pass for the next gate.
- Caravans and campervans are banned on the park side-roads; no pets, assistance dogs only.
- Flies are relentless from spring onward — bring repellent.
- Mobile coverage is patchy: Telstra reaches town and parts of the park, Optus is hit and miss, Vodafone has nothing. Download offline maps before you leave Geraldton.
- The town was hit by Cyclone Seroja in April 2021; services were back by 2022 but shade trees are still regrowing, so there is little cover at midday.
Kalbarri is a small, low-crime town; the real hazards are heat, unmarked cliff edges and long drives with no phone signal. Stay on marked trails, tell someone your plan before hiking the gorge, and carry more water than you think you need.
