Kalajoki
Go for 1–2 nights in Jun–Aug for the Hiekkasärkät dunes and beach; outside summer it is a quiet town with most resort services shut.
Kalajoki is a small Bothnian Bay town whose kilometres of sand dunes, the Hiekkasärkät, were built up as a beach resort from the 1970s. It works as a summer beach-and-spa stop on the Kokkola–Oulu road, not as a year-round sightseeing city. Come in July for warm water and long light, or skip it if you want museums and nightlife.

Get around
The centre and the dunes are a few kilometres apart, so a car or bike helps. Local buses link the two, and Joe Scooter e-scooters are rented in the centre and dunes in season. Taxis run via app (Valopilkku, 02 Taksi, Otaxi).

Scams and watch-outs
- Resort services, JukuPark and many restaurants are summer-only: check opening dates before booking outside Jun–Aug.
- Camping is forbidden on the Kallankarit islands.
- The Bothnian Bay is shallow and warms slowly: July is the only reliably warm swimming month.
- Distances between the centre, dunes and Himanka are longer than they look on a map.
Very safe. Main risks are cold water and currents when swimming, sunburn on the open dunes, and long empty roads if driving at night.
