Kajaani is the administrative capital of Kainuu and a small former industrial town on the Oulujoki river, just south-east of Lake Oulujärvi. Most travellers pass through on Highway 5 or the Helsinki–Oulu rail line, or use it as the service town for the Vuokatti ski resort 40 km east. The centre is walkable and the castle ruins sit on an island in the middle of town, so a single night covers the sights; two nights make sense if you add Paltaniemi, the lake or a Vuokatti day.

Get around
The centre, the castle ruins and both museums are walkable. Local buses run on weekdays and Saturdays but not on Sundays, when coaches are the only public transport. Coaches go to Sotkamo and Vuokatti, Oulu, Kuhmo and Kokkola. Driving is easy, parking is rarely a problem, and taxis are booked by app or phone.

Kajaani is a very safe small city. The real issues are winter driving, moose and reindeer on the road, and noisy weekend nights around Kauppakatu and Välikatu when the bars close.
