Kaiapoi
Skip as a destination. Use as a lunch stop or a quick walk along the Waimakariri River if you are driving SH1 between Christchurch and Kaikōura. Not worth a dedicated trip.
Kaiapoi is a commuter town 17 km north of Christchurch, bypassed by SH1. It has a river walk, a few eateries and a speedway, but nothing that justifies a detour. Most travellers pass through on the way to Kaikōura or Waipara without stopping.
