Kâhta

Come only for Mount Nemrut: one night in Kâhta or Karadut, June–Sep, own car or a tour. Outside that window, skip it.

Kâhta is a working town of about 132,000 people in Southeastern Anatolia whose only real draw is Mount Nemrut, the Commagene royal tomb and statue terrace 2,134 m up. The summit road is reliably open June–Sep, so the town works as a one-night base for sunrise or sunset at the heads, with Arsameia, Karakuş Tumulus and the Severan Bridge on the same loop.

By air

Daily flights from Istanbul (IST, SAW) and Ankara; few facilities. About 15 km west of Kâhta, 20 km east of Adıyaman; dolmuş on the D360, or walk 1 km north to the interchange.

Get around

You need your own vehicle or an organised tour for the summit; there is no public transport up. The south road via Karadut is paved and fine for 2WD June–Sep; the north road via Büyüköz is paved to Güneş Motel, then 2 km of rough track. Start with at least half a tank: the climb is low gear most of the way. Park about 500 m short of the summit and walk. Dolmuşes run frequently on the D360 between Kâhta and Adıyaman.

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Handshake; 'Merhaba' (hello) or 'Selamün aleyküm' in conservative areas; cheek kisses between friends of the same sex; avoid: Offering a hand to a conservative woman first — wait for hers

Scams and watch-outs

  • The summit road is only reliably open June–Sep; May and Oct are hit or miss and bad weather makes the trip pointless.
  • Visitor vehicles cannot cross the summit between the south and north approach roads.
  • No mobile signal on the lane up Mount Nemrut, and dead spots on the approach roads.
  • Kâhta's hamams have stayed closed since the 2023 earthquake.
  • Accommodation pushes its own Nemrut tour and may overstate why you cannot drive yourself.

Kâhta is a normal Anatolian town and the tourist route to Nemrut is well trodden; the real risks are the mountain road (fuel, weather, no signal) and summer heat at the summit. Carry ID, expect checks, and keep to the main roads after dark.
