Kagoshima is the southern end of the Kyushu Shinkansen and the launch pad for Sakurajima, Yakushima and the sand baths at Ibusuki. The volcano sits across a 15-minute ferry ride and dusts the city with ash most weeks. Two nights covers the core; three or more only if you add islands.

Get around
Trams (lines 1 and 2) cover the centre for a flat ¥170 per ride, pay on exit; IC cards work poorly, so carry coins or buy a RapiCa card at the station. City buses cost about ¥150. The Sakurajima ferry runs around the clock, about 15 min each way.

Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings

- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Volcanic ash falls most weeks: keep a mask or cloth for your face and don't wear white.
- Tourists are forbidden within 2 km of the Sakurajima crater; check the current alert level before you go.
- Two central stations: Kagoshima (north, older) and Kagoshima-Chūō (Shinkansen). Most trips use Chūō.
- Typhoon season Jun–Sep can cancel ferries to Yakushima and Tanegashima; keep a buffer day.
Kagoshima is a calm, low-crime city; the real risks are volcanic ash, summer heat and typhoons that cancel island ferries. Check the Sakurajima alert level and keep a buffer day before any flight home.
