Kabwe
Skip Kabwe as a sightseeing stop: give it half a day for the Big Tree and Broken Hill hike, or pass through on the Great North Road between Lusaka and the Copperbelt.
Kabwe is the capital of Central Province and Zambia's fourth-largest city, 1.5–2 h north of Lusaka on the Great North Road. It is a working town, not a tourist town: a colonial lead and zinc mine, a landmark fig tree, the hill that gave the mine its name, and a political shrine 10 km out. Infrastructure is worn, the soil around the old mine carries heavy lead contamination, and there is little to see beyond a half day. Treat it as a leg-stretch, a cheap bed, or a base for the Mulungushi Rock of Authority, not a destination.

Get around
Blue-and-white minibuses run all over town and stop wherever you flag them, but drop you where the driver chooses; agree the fare before boarding. Most locals walk or cycle, and dirt shortcuts cross the railway between Luangwa suburb and the centre. If you drive, keep well clear of minibuses and go slowly: side streets are rutted dirt.
