Kabul is the capital and largest city of Afghanistan, in a high valley of the Hindu Kush at about 1,800 m. Its old city, gardens and markets have been shaped by more than four decades of conflict and, since 2021, by the current administration's rules for foreign visitors and for women in particular. Conditions change with little notice, so treat every detail here as background, not a plan.
