Kaarina is a town of 32,000 that grew from a rural parish into a commuter belt for Turku, 10 km west. Its draw is small and specific: the 14th-century Kuusisto Castle ruins, two bird sanctuaries with towers, a shallow lake beach with a 1950s dance pavilion, and forest trails. Hotels are few and most visitors sleep in Turku and drive or take the bus out for half a day.

- Most Kaarina restaurants close by 21:00; for a late dinner go to Turku.
Very safe. The real risks are icy paths and unplowed ruins in winter, flooded duckboards, and swimming at Littoistenjärvi when water quality warnings are up.
