Junee
Give Junee one night, not a base: the Roundhouse Museum and the licorice factory fill a half-day, and the Sydney–Melbourne train stops here twice a day.
Junee is a small Riverina railway town of about 4,900 people, halfway between Sydney and Melbourne on the main southern line. Its draw is the old railway roundhouse and a working licorice and chocolate factory, both reachable on foot or by bike from the centre. Most travellers pass through on the train or stop one night on the drive between Wagga Wagga and Cootamundra.

Get around
The town is flat and small enough to walk, but the cycle path network is unusually good for a country town: the Federation Pathway runs to the showground and the licorice factory, and a path crosses the wetlands. A car helps for Monte Cristo Homestead and for day trips; the train station is central.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Trains between Sydney and Melbourne stop here only about twice a day each way: check times before you plan a rail arrival.
- Summer days regularly pass 35 °C; carry water and avoid midday walking.
- Monte Cristo Homestead is run-down and partly closed off: read recent visitor reports before paying.
- Rural mobile coverage can drop outside town; download maps and tickets before you leave.
Junee is a quiet country town and feels safe day and night; the real risks are summer heat, long empty roads and bushfire weather in the surrounding Riverina.
