Juiz de Fora ("JF") sits in the Paraibuna valley between the Órgãos and Mantiqueira ranges, 189 km from Rio de Janeiro and 260 km from Belo Horizonte on the BR-040. It is a real Brazilian provincial city of about 570,000 people, not a sightseeing town: a compact centre, two good museums, a hilltop viewpoint and a strong bar and churrascaria scene. Most travellers pass through on the Rio–Minas bus corridor or use it as a base for the mountain towns of southern Minas Gerais.

The centre is compact and walkable — Av. Rio Branco, Rua Halfeld and the museum cluster are within 20 minutes on foot. City buses are frequent and converge on Av.
