Voykit pocket guide · The Gambia
Juffureh
Half-day trip from Banjul or the Atlantic Coast: ferry to Barra, then a short ride. Go for the Roots connection and Kunta Kinteh Island, not as a base.
Juffureh is a small North Bank town known as the ancestral home of Kunta Kinte from Alex Haley's Roots. The main draw is the Slave Museum, the slave monument and the boat trip to Kunta Kinteh Island (UNESCO). Most visitors come as a guided half-day from Banjul or the coast; the town itself has no overnight appeal.
