Juarez
Ciudad Juárez
Cross for a day from El Paso, not a base: downtown sights in 4–6 h on foot. Sleep in Juarez only if you have business or a flight from CJS.
Ciudad Juárez sits on the Rio Grande across from El Paso, a desert city of over a million and the anchor of northern vaquero culture. Almost all visitors come for a single day on foot from the US side: the historic centre, the cathedral and Guadalupe Mission, the border-revolution museum and the markets are within a walk of the Santa Fe bridge. Nights here are for business travellers, not sightseeing.

Get around
The historic centre is walkable from the Santa Fe and Paso del Norte bridges. Taxis are unmetered: agree the fare before you get in, and ask two drivers. City buses are cheap but confusing for visitors; avoid them after dark.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Juárez has a high homicide rate tied to organised crime; the risk to a daytime tourist in the centre is low, but do not wander at night or into peripheral colonias.
- Do not buy or carry drugs; Mexican police treat drug cases harshly and consular help is limited.
- Crossing back to the US can take 1–3 h on foot at peak times; carry your passport and check the wait before you commit.
- If you drive into Mexico you need Mexican insurance; a US policy is not valid and an accident without it can mean jail.
- Carry small peso notes for taxis and market stalls; card readers are common in malls but not everywhere.
Daytime in the historic centre is manageable if you stay on the main streets and cross back before dark. Juárez has a serious homicide rate linked to drug trafficking, and police response is unreliable: no night wandering, no peripheral colonias, no drugs.
One and two days
