Joinville is Santa Catarina's largest city and its most German-flavoured one: founded in 1851 by German, Swiss and Norwegian settlers, with timber-frame houses, a migration museum and a dance festival that fills the city for ten days in late July. It is an industrial city, not a resort, and the sights sit close together in the centre, so it works as a one-day stop on the BR-101 between Curitiba and Florianópolis or as a two-night base for the coast at São Francisco do Sul.

Get around
Walk Centro: the museum, Rua das Palmeiras, the public market and Rua Visconde de Taunay are all within about 20 minutes on foot. For the lookout, zoo or Vigorelli Beach use the city bus network; buy tickets at bus terminals or on board. Buses painted all blue, or with a blue stripe, are express services between terminals and skip stops.
