Layover in Johannesburg: what to do

Yes, if you are allowed to enter South Africa and your connection gives you enough time. O. R. Tambo is a normal international airport with immigration on arrival, so leaving means clearing passport control, then clearing it again plus security when you come back. Budget 60–90 minutes for the return: immigration queues, security and a walk to the gate.

The practical rule is 8 hours between scheduled arrival and departure for anything in Johannesburg itself, and 6 hours if you stay in Sandton or the Kempton Park hotel strip near the airport. Below 6 hours, stay airside: the lounges, the food court and the shops are adequate, and the risk of missing a connection is not worth a 40-minute taxi ride.

Two things change the maths. If your onward flight is on a separate ticket, you are responsible for the connection, so add a buffer. If you arrive on a long-haul overnight and your onward flight is the next morning, a 12–24 hour layover is really an overnight stay: book an airport hotel and treat the city as a half-day trip.

South Africa does not have a general airside transit visa for passengers who stay in the terminal and do not cross immigration. If you never leave the transit area, most nationalities need nothing beyond a valid passport and an onward ticket. The moment you step through immigration, normal entry rules apply.

Many Western passports get visa-free entry for tourism: the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and most EU countries are typically admitted for up to 90 days per calendar year. Some nationalities need a visa in advance, and South Africa has at times required an unabridged birth certificate or consent letter for children travelling with one parent. Rules change; confirm with the South African Department of Home Affairs or your airline before you fly.

Passport validity matters too: South Africa generally wants at least 30 days beyond your intended departure and two blank pages, and many airlines apply a stricter six-month rule at check-in. If your passport is close to expiry, you may be refused boarding even for a transit.

If your bags are checked through to your final destination, leave them there and travel with a day bag. That is the single biggest time saver on a short layover.

If you are carrying your bags, O. R. Tambo has left-luggage facilities in the terminal where you can drop a bag for a few hours or a day. Prices are per bag per day and vary by size; pay at the counter and keep the receipt. Airport hotels near the terminal will also hold bags for guests, and some will do it for a fee if you are not staying.

Do not leave bags unattended anywhere in the terminal or in a car. If you take a ride-hail into the city, keep everything with you rather than leaving it in the vehicle.

The Gautrain is the cleanest option. From the airport station it runs to Sandton in about 15 minutes and on to Pretoria in about 40 minutes, roughly R200–250 for the airport trip. You need a Gautrain card or a contactless bank card, and service is limited late at night, so check the last train before you plan a return.

Ride-hailing with Uber or Bolt is the default for anywhere the train does not reach. The airport to Sandton is about 30 minutes outside rush hour and roughly R250–400; to Maboneng or the inner city, 30–45 minutes and R350–500 (2026 estimate). Rush hour on the M1 and N3 can double those times. Check the number plate before you get in.

Metered taxis and hotel shuttles exist but are usually more expensive and need booking. Do not use unmarked cars offering rides in the arrivals hall. For the return, leave the city at least 3 hours before departure for a long-haul flight, 2 hours for a domestic connection.

Six hours is a Sandton trip: Gautrain in, a meal and a walk through the malls around Nelson Mandela Square, then the train back. It is not Johannesburg at its best, but it is safe, quick and easy to reverse.

Twelve hours buys you one real sight. The Apartheid Museum next to Gold Reef City is the strongest single stop, with Soweto and Vilakazi Street as the alternative; both need a car or a guided tour and 4–6 hours including travel. Maboneng and the inner city work for street food, galleries and coffee if you go in daylight and take a ride-hail door to door.

Twenty-four hours is an overnight: sleep near the airport or in Sandton, then spend a full day on Soweto plus the Apartheid Museum, or a half-day city and half-day Sandton. Do not try to add a safari; the nearest real game viewing is hours away.
