Johannesburg
eGoli
Give Johannesburg 2 nights only if you pre-book a Soweto tour and pick one museum; 3 nights lets you see the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill and Soweto without rushing. Base in Sandton or Rosebank and move by Gautrain, tour van or ride-hailing.
Johannesburg is South Africa's largest city and its economic engine, at 1,750 m on the Highveld. It is not a walk-around sight city: the sights that matter — the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, the Mandela House in Soweto — are spread across 40+ km and reached by car or tour. Two nights covers the core; three lets you add a day trip. Most visitors pair it with Cape Town or use it as the gateway to Kruger.

Get around
The city was built for cars. Gautrain is fast, clean and guarded, linking the airport, Sandton, Rosebank, Marlboro, Midrand and Pretoria, but it does not reach the centre or Soweto. Use ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt) or a rental car for everything else; minibus taxis are cheap but not for visitors without a local. Allow 45–60 min for cross-city trips and avoid the 06:30–09:00 and 15:30–18:30 peaks. The city was built for cars. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say hello and ask how someone is before any request; avoid: Launching straight into a question
- Handshakes: Three-part African handshake with friends; a normal handshake with strangers; avoid: Refusing an offered hand
- Elders: Use Mr/Mrs or 'Mama', 'Baba' respectfully in townships and rural areas; avoid: First names with older people you have just met
- Braai invitations: Bring meat or drinks, and arrive on 'African time'; avoid: Taking over the fire
- Photos: Ask first, especially in townships and villages; avoid: Photographing children without a parent's permission
- Politics and race: Ask questions and listen; avoid: Lecturing on history or crime
Scams and watch-outs
- Crime is uneven: Sandton, Rosebank and Maboneng by day are fine, but do not walk in the Inner City or around Park Station after dark.
- Do not stop at red lights after dark in a car, and keep doors locked and windows up in traffic.
- Use only metered taxis or a ride-hailing app; ignore anyone offering a taxi inside the airport terminal.
- At the airport, use ATMs rather than the exchange desks, whose commissions cut what you get by 10% or more.
- Altitude is 1,750 m: expect breathlessness on stairs for the first day, and drink more water than usual.
- Summer afternoon thunderstorms are sudden and heavy; carry a light rain layer Dec–Feb.
Johannesburg's crime is real but concentrated. Stay in Sandton, Rosebank or a Soweto guesthouse, move by car or Gautrain after dark, do not walk the Inner City at night, and never stop at red lights in a car after dark.
