South Johannesburg, Johannesburg: neighborhood guide

South Johannesburg is the belt of suburbs and industrial land south of the M2, running from Rosettenville and Turffontein out through Mondeor, Mulbarton, Alberton and Brackendowns. It is not a tourist quarter in the way Sandton or the Inner City are. It is where Johannesburg works and where much of it lives: warehouses, mine dumps, older brick suburbs, big shopping centres and the two sights that pull most visitors south.

The Apartheid Museum and Gold Reef City sit next to each other in Ormonde, on the same block of Northern Parkway. That pairing is the reason most travellers come. Beyond it, Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve gives you 640 hectares of veld and rocky ridges with zebra, wildebeest and blesbok, and the James Hall Museum of Transport in La Rochelle covers the country's transport history.

Distances are real here. Ormonde to the Inner City is roughly 10 km, to Sandton 25–30 km, and to Soweto about 15 km. Nothing is walkable between sights, and the streets between them are not places to stroll. Treat the south as a set of destinations reached by car, not as a neighbourhood to wander.

Stay if you have a car, want a quieter and often cheaper base, and plan to spend a day at the Apartheid Museum plus a day at Gold Reef City or in Klipriviersberg. It also works if Soweto is on your list, since Southgate in Mondeor is only a few minutes from the edge of Soweto.

Do not stay if you are relying on the Gautrain, which does not reach the south, or if you want to walk out for dinner. Most first-time visitors sleep in Sandton for hotels and malls, or in the Inner City for museums and history, and travel south for one day. If you are here for two nights before a flight, a guesthouse in Mondeor or Alberton is practical; for a city break, it is the wrong base.

The south is not a dining district. Most food is in shopping centres and along main roads: Southgate in Mondeor has the usual chain restaurants and food courts, and Alberton and Rosettenville have local grills, takeaways and bakeries. For a proper meal out, most people drive north or eat at their guesthouse.

Gold Reef City adds a casino-restaurant with grills, seafood and live jazz, open for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday (check). If you are staying south, plan dinner near where you sleep or at the casino complex rather than expecting a strip of restaurants.

There is no Gautrain station south of the city centre, and the Metrorail commuter trains are not a realistic option for visitors. In practice you drive, take e-hailing, or book a metered taxi through your accommodation. Minibus taxis run everywhere but are not set up for visitors with luggage.

From OR Tambo airport the drive to Mondeor or Alberton is roughly 30–40 minutes outside peak traffic, and the N1 and N3 are close. From Sandton allow 40–60 minutes in traffic. The Apartheid Museum and Gold Reef City are on Northern Parkway in Ormonde, reached from the M1 South via the Xavier Street exit; Klipriviersberg's entrance is on Impala Road. Distances are short in kilometres but slow in peak hours, so group the south sights into one day rather than crossing the city twice.
