Joggins
Go for one day: the fossil cliffs and centre take 2–4 hours. Sleep in Parrsboro or Amherst, not here.
Joggins is a village of a few hundred people on the Nova Scotia side of the Bay of Fundy, and its whole reason to exist as a stop is a UNESCO-listed cliff of 310-million-year-old rock. The Fossil Centre runs May 1 to mid-October; outside that window the cliffs are still there but nothing is staffed. Plan a half day, pair it with Parrsboro, and treat it as a stop rather than a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- The tide at Joggins can rise several metres and the cliff base floods: check a Fundy tide table before walking the shore, and never let the water cut you off.
- Fossils and rock are protected: collecting, hammering or chipping the cliff is illegal. Look, photograph, leave it.
- The cliff face sheds rock. Stay off the scree directly under the cliff and away from overhangs.
- Cell coverage is patchy along Route 209 and 242; download offline maps before you leave Amherst.
- Nothing much is open outside the May–mid-October season: no centre, no guided tours, limited food.
Very low crime; the real risks are Fundy tides, falling rock at the cliff base and long empty roads with patchy phone signal. Tell someone your plan if you walk the shore.
