Base in Pingyao or Yuci for 2 nights, not Jinzhong city: the merchant compounds and Pingyao old town are the point, and they sit 30–90 min apart.
Jinzhong is a prefecture wrapped around Pingyao, not a city you tour on its own. Its draw is the Shanxi merchant legacy: walled Pingyao, the Qiao, Wang, Chang and Qu family compounds, and Mount Mian. Yuci is the transport and museum base 32 km from Taiyuan; Pingyao is where you sleep. Two nights covers Pingyao plus one or two compounds; three nights adds Mount Mian or Zhangbi.

Get around
High-speed trains link Taiyuan, Jinzhong (Yuci) and Pingyao; the special tourist bus from Yuci Old Town runs to the Chang, Qiao and Wang compounds, Pingyao, Mount Mian and Zhangbi. Local buses reach the compounds from county seats; taxis are the fallback for the last few km.

Scams and watch-outs
- Compound tickets are separate: Qiao ¥115, Wang ¥55, Chang ¥80, Yuci Old Town ¥60 — budget for each (2026 estimate).
- Mount Mian ticket packages include internal buses that are effectively required to reach the sights.
- Jinzhong City Museum caps visitors at 4,000 a day and closes Mondays; no entry after 16:00.
- Yuci Old Town is largely rebuilt; the Yuan-era City God Temple is the original part.
- Pingyao old town entry is free but individual sights charge; check current rules before you go.
Low street-crime risk. The real issues are summer downpours in July–August, long taxi gaps at the compounds, and separate tickets at every gate: keep cash and small notes.
