Give Jinja 2 nights if you raft or kayak the Nile; 1 night is enough if you only want the Source of the Nile and a sunset cruise.
Jinja sits where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria, 80 km east of Kampala. It is Uganda's activity town rather than a wildlife stop: rafting, kayaking, bungee and boat cruises, plus the Source of the Nile monument and a market that sells craft you will not find elsewhere in the country. Most travellers come for two nights from Kampala or as a break on the road to Mbale and the east.

Get around
Boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) is the default: about UGX 1,000–2,000 for a hop in town, UGX 10,000–20,000 for a short tour. Matatus and coasters run the main roads. The town is spread out, so plan on two or three boda rides a day rather than walking everywhere.

Scams and watch-outs
- Agree the boda fare before you get on; prices vary by rider.
- Local roads turn to deep mud after rain — bike tours and walks can be cancelled.
- Carry cash: ATMs exist (Stanbic, Equity, KCB, DTB, Ecobank, UBA, I&M) but withdrawal fees and empty machines are common.
- Rafting is a real risk sport: use an established operator, follow the safety briefing and check your travel insurance covers Class 5 white water.
- Avoid street meat if your stomach is untested; samosas and rolex are the safer cheap options.
Jinja is a working town, not a resort: petty theft happens around the market and at night, so use registered bodas, keep phones out of sight and do not walk dark roads alone. The bigger risks are the river and the roads.
