Use Jining as a rail stop between Hohhot and Erenhot or Datong: half a day for the campaign museum and old town, then move on.
Jining is the transport and commercial hub of Ulanqab Prefecture in south-central Inner Mongolia, with 377,000 people. Its main draw is the Jining Campaign Memorial Museum and a compact old town. Most travellers pass through on the Trans-Mongolian railway or the line to Erenhot.
