Jiaozuo is a coal city that turned itself into the gateway to the southern Taihang Mountains. Almost every visitor comes for Yuntai Mountain and the Tai Chi village at Chenjiagou, not for the urban districts, which are a working Chinese city with a Wanda mall and little for a tourist to walk to. High-speed rail from Zhengzhou takes about 40 minutes, so it works as a two-night base or a long day trip.

Get around
City buses reach most districts and the tourist bus station on Tanan Road runs services to Yuntai Mountain, Qingtian River, Shennong Mountain and Chenjiagou. Taxis and ride-hailing are cheap and the practical choice for two or more people. A car is the most flexible way to link the Taihang scenic areas, but you need a Chinese licence to drive legally.

Jiaozuo is a low-crime city and the usual risks are traffic, mountain stairs and summer storms. Keep to marked paths at Yuntai after rain, and carry your passport — hotels register foreign guests.
