Jianshui
Spend 1–2 days in Jianshui: see the four historic gates, Confucius Temple, Examination Hall and take the old narrow‑gauge train.
Jianshui (Lin'an Town) is a walkable historic centre in Yunnan’s fertile valley, with well‑preserved Ming‑Qing gates, a large Confucius Temple, pottery shops and a tourist train. One full day covers the main sights; a second day lets you explore Swallow Cave or nearby villages.

Mandarin is the language of the whole country, written in Simplified characters; Cantonese dominates Guangdong and Hong Kong, and dozens of regional languages survive at home. English is on metro signs, airports and large hotels; elsewhere use a translation app. Pinyin (the romanisation) helps with names but tones change meaning.
- Translation apps: Baidu Translate, Youdao, Microsoft Translator and Apple Translate work without a VPN; Google Translate needs one or a roaming eSIM.
