Give Jiangyin one full day, or skip it: the Yangtze forts and Xu Xiake's house are the only reasons to come, and Wuxi or Suzhou do water towns better.
Jiangyin is a county-level port city on the south bank of the Yangtze, under Wuxi, about 40 km from Wuxi's airport. It has a riverfront park, two late-Qing forts, the birthplace of Ming travel writer Xu Xiake and a well-preserved canal town at Changjing. Most travellers pass through on the way between Wuxi, Nanjing and Shanghai; one night is enough, and only if the forts or Xu Xiake interest you.

Get around
The centre is compact and walkable; use taxis or ride-hailing for the forts and Ebizui Park, which sit a few km north on the river. Shared bikes work for short hops. A city sightseeing bus runs roughly April–December on set routes and needs advance booking. High-speed rail from Jiangyin East Station links Wuxi, Nanjing and Shanghai.

- Mobile payment (Alipay or WeChat Pay) is near-universal; set it up before you arrive, as cash is awkward.
- Check opening hours and any renovation closures for the forts and Xu Xiake's residence before travelling out.
Jiangyin is a low-crime city and safe to walk by day. The real issues are summer heat and humidity, unmarked bar prices, and traffic when crossing roads; keep valuables out of sight in crowds.
